Elena Subach

Elena Subach (b.1980, Vhervonohrad, Ukraine)
Elena Subach is a visual artist who currently lives and works in Lviv. Her artistic practice focuses on exploring memory, space, religion, tradition, the construction of history, as well as the consequences of the Soviet colonial past. A significant theme in the artist’s work is the fragility of the world and its living beings. In her art, Subach often turns to liminal spaces as a visual metaphor for the inner state of a person experiencing change, loss, or a reinterpretation of experience. 
Subach turned to photography in 2012. Between 2019 and 2022, she worked as a curator at the Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery. She currently teaches art history and curatorial practice at the School of Visual Communications in Kyiv.
The artist has received several awards, including the Vogue Phuturespective (2025), New East Photo Prize from the Calvert Foundation (2016), and Future Talents (2019). 
The photographs of Subach belong to important public collections including the Neues Museum, Nürnberg (Germany); the Victoria & Albert Museum (UK) and the Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photography (Ukraine). They were exhibited in leading museums, including the Nordic House in Reykjavik (Iceland); Photo Élysée Museum of Photography in Lausanne, (Switzerland);  Bibliotheca Hertziana Max Planck Institute in Rome (Italy) and Kunstforum Wien (Austria), Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool (GB), Saatchi Gallery in London (GB), in Théâtre de la Ville de Paris (France).
The artist’s photographs have been recently featured by international press, such as The Art Newspaper (France), Harper’s Bazaar (Italy), MoMA Press (USA), The Guardian (UK), The British Journal of Photography (UK), Fisheye (France), Nouvel Obs (France), Weltkunst (Germany), Vogue (Ukraine, Poland).

Elena Subach ( née en 1980 à Vhervonohrad, Ukraine )

Elena Subach vit et travaille à Lviv, Ukraine. Sa pratique artistique explore la mémoire, l’espace, la tradition et la construction de l’histoire. La fragilité de notre monde ainsi que celle des êtres vivants sont des thèmes majeurs de son travail. L’artiste se sert souvent de la représentation d’espaces liminaires dans son art, comme d’une métaphore visuelle de l’état intérieur d’une personne traversant un changement, une perte ou la réappropriation d’une expérience subie.
Subach s’est tournée vers la photographie en 2012. Entre 2019 et 2022, elle a travaillé comme commissaire à la Galerie nationale d’art Borys Voznytsky de Lviv. Elle enseigne actuellement l’histoire de l’art et la pratique curatoriale à la l’Ecole de la communication visuelle à Kyiv. 
La photographe a été récompensée de plusieurs prix, dont le Vogue Phuturespective (2025), le New East Photo Prize de la Calvert Foundation (2016) ou le Future Talents (2019).
Les œuvres de Subach font partie d’importantes collections, notamment celles du Neues Museum de Nuremberg (Allemagne), du Victoria & Albert Museum (Royaume-Uni) et du Musée de l’École de photographie de Kharkiv (Ukraine). Elles ont été exposées au Nordic House à Reykjavik (Islande), au Musée de la photographie Photo Élysée à Lausanne (Suisse), à la Bibliotheca Hertziana - Institut Max Planck à Rome (Italie) au Kunstforum Wien (Autriche) et à Saatchi Gallery (UK), au Théâtre de la Ville de Paris (France). 
Les photographies de l’artiste ont récemment fait l’objet de publications dans la presse internationale, notamment dans The Art Newspaper (France), Harper’s Bazaar (Italie), MoMA Press (USA), The Guardian (UK), The British Journal of Photography (UK), Fisheye (France), Nouvel Obs (France), Weltkunst (Allemagne) et Vogue (Pologne, Ukraine).
